Though native gardening has grown in popularity in recent years, many people still consider native gardens to look unruly, scraggly, weedy and unkept. That doesn’t have to be the norm!

Native plants and flowers are tremendously beneficial to our environment and native pollinators, and more and more nurseries and even some big box stores carry some keystone native species. In fact, you likely see native plants on every street today, and may not even know they’re native to our region.

I won’t argue that sometimes native gardens can look like overgrown patches of weeds, but that doesn’t have to be the norm.
When planning native gardens, it’s important to consider soil, light and moisture conditions, but also to select plants you actually love that are suited to your environment and conditions. And if you don’t think through all that, and just want to experiment with planting a few here and there, they might surprise you with their resilience and adaptabilty.
One of the greatest joys we find in the native patches of our garden is the constant stream of visitors, including native bee species, caterpillars, butterflies, beetles, birds, bats and so many four legged furry friends. Here are some cute ones.

And some more pics of blooming native plants throughout our garden this year for inspiration.
