New Home… New Views… New Projects…

We have moved. I’ve been meaning to write about our new place but it’s been a hectic month. I’m not even sure how to start. This is the view from my bedroom window as I write this sipping coffee propped up in bed on what feels like the first lazy morning I remember.

There is snow on the ground this morning. My body hates cold but this morning my heart is happy to see it because I have met a hefty goal I had set for myself moving here. It was a bit out there, but I wanted to finish building my greenhouse before the snow came. Straps went on yesterday. Someday maybe I will backtrack and write a bitchy post about how frustrating the experience of putting this little beast together was, but for now here is a little slide show of how it slowly came together over the past few weeks. There is nothing going inside it until early spring, but I have plenty of time now to think about what I want to do with the inside by then. Stay tuned.

Back to our new place. Here it is, in all its glory. 1.7 acres of land backing onto forest, complete with our own little slice of “mountain” in the back.

A head start on my goals growing a food forest, with a few fruit trees and berry bushes sprinkled throughout. Many of these will be surprise discoveries next year, but I am fairly sure there is a mature butternut tree on the property.

A little stream flows just off of our property line,  and much of the soil toward the back seems to be consistently water logged. I’m hoping we can eventually harness this water to our advantage. I will watch it next year.

There is a derilect “garage” / massive shed at the back of the property. The roof leaks, there are squirrel colonies living in the wet insulation, it’s pretty close to a tear down, but we have big plans to save it and have fun in that space once our inside renos are done. We have A LOT of renos.

The house is a cute little bungalow built in the 80s. There is currently one bathroom and 3 bedrooms, but the basement is not finished. There are 5 of us, 2 are teenagers, and we cannot survive with one bathroom. Also 3 bedrooms doesn’t work for 5 people. But there is lots of space.

The basement was unfinished, we are currently building 2 bedrooms and a bathroom down there. By we I mean Colin. That is project number 1 here.  After that we will slowly demolish the current floor plan and kitchen up here, but at a far more sustainable, fun pace.

For now, we live on top of each other and dress from boxes and floor clothes, wait in line for the bathroom, adjust to early morning school bus pickups at the end of our long driveway, and enjoy the beautiful sunsets, the silence, and the peace of country life.
