Seedy Saturday Aylmer: Help Wanted / Samedi des semences Aylmer : On a besoin de vous !

With only 3 weeks to go, seed packing is still going strong! We have had an incredible outpouring of support and donations from so many seed companies; we are struggling to keep our donors page updated. A huge thank you to our generous Quebec-based donors, including: ✳️Les Semis de la Seigneurie (Aylmer)✳️Les Jardins de l’Écoumène … Continue reading Seedy Saturday Aylmer: Help Wanted / Samedi des semences Aylmer : On a besoin de vous !

Winter Sowing Adventures of (Almost Nursery) Scale

Oops. I ignored my fridge seed experiments too long and accidentally sprouted a bunch of them early.  I'm seed-snailing them along with several tree seeds, hoping they won't need more space than this until I can move them to the greenhouse in March. Early risers observed: Sundial Lupine (Lupinus perennis - pictured above), Wild Senna … Continue reading Winter Sowing Adventures of (Almost Nursery) Scale

Pollinate Aylmer and our Winter Happenings

Over the few months, a beautiful friendship has been cemented between Localeaf (our nursery), Pollinate Aylmer (our incredible group of local volunteers), and Partenaires du Secteur Aylmer (our mentors, enablers, and now partners in helping us bring back the butterflies, fireflies, pollinators and other wildlife in our community). We've grown so much that we found … Continue reading Pollinate Aylmer and our Winter Happenings

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Butterflyway Aylmer (2025 edition)

I've been meaning to write this, but fall is a very busy time for an 'almost nursery', as I'm learning. The incredible people of Pollinate / Polliniser Aylmer, who made this happen, already know about it, so it's been waiting patiently on the back of my mind, behind some last minute planting projects, and life. … Continue reading Everything you ever wanted to know about the Butterflyway Aylmer (2025 edition)

Embrace Impulsive Gardening: How killing plants makes me a better gardener

I met a maybe-new-friend last week, and of course we chatted plants, chickens, and weird ailments. She said something to me along the lines of wishing she could bring herself to just do, and not overthink her garden planning. If she reads this post I hope this will inspire her to trust she can. Or … Continue reading Embrace Impulsive Gardening: How killing plants makes me a better gardener

Tomatoes, tomAHtoes and 34 varieties of everything in between

34 varieties of heirloom tomato seedlings

We LOVE tomatoes around here. My personal favorites are large beefsteak and slicing varieties, but the kids prefer cherry, grape and any other small type of small tomatoes so we have always grown a few different kinds. Last year I experimented with growing more tomato plants than we needed, and placing some in random parts … Continue reading Tomatoes, tomAHtoes and 34 varieties of everything in between

The making of a nursery. Year 1… February Updates

Getting away from my personal life and back to the purpose of this blog, here's an update on our activities and where we are at coming to the end of this short month, and preparing for spring. I don't want to sugar coat anything or pretend we have things figured out because we are soooo far from that, but bit by bit it feels like we are starting to figure out some things. The kids have been amazing through it all.

Why am I doing this? Some TMI and personal shit resulting in a micro-nursery

Why Localeaf? I have a few reasons. Not one of them is extensive horticultural experience or credentials, because really, honestly, I have none. Everything I know about plants and gardening I taught myself, mostly through trial and (a lot) of error.   Winter experiments growing rooting plants in fish water I have been growing plants and … Continue reading Why am I doing this?
