- Characteristic species of rich mesic deciduous forests, floodplain woods, and ravine bottoms on calcareous or loamy soils. Typically found in beech-maple (Fagus-Acer) communities, often with Trillium grandiflorum, Sanguinaria canadensis, and Cardamine spp. In Ontario, ranked S2 (Imperiled) with very few known populations. Reaches its northern range limit in southern Ontario.
