Woolly Dutchman's-pipe is a deciduous woody vine native to the southeastern United States (FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, SC). In its native range it inhabits river banks and moist habitats, often climbing into the forest canopy. It is occasionally cultivated and rarely escapes northward. The single Quebec specimen (Université Laval) was found on the edge of an abandoned nursery, indicating cultivated rather than natural origin.
