- Occurs in dry prairies, oak savannas, sand barrens, jack pine plains, and open rocky places on well-drained sandy or gravelly soils, often over limestone. In Ontario, confined to scattered sites on Manitoulin Island, the Lake Huron shoreline, and southwestern Ontario. The shortest Liatris species, it favours xeric, low-competition microsites.
