- Pioneer of dry, open, sandy or rocky barren ground. Found in oak-sassafras savannas, jack pine plains, sand blowouts, dried lakebeds, and disturbed sandy sites. In Quebec, herbarium specimens are concentrated in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, particularly from dry peatlands (tourbières sèches) and sandy agricultural margins near Huntingdon, Farnham, and the Châteauguay region.
