A species of dry open ground and prairies in the central and south-central US. Typical habitats include woodland edges, openings, and thickets on well-drained soils. In Michigan, found at the extreme northern edge of its range in prairie remnants on dry sandy or loamy soils, associated with Andropogon gerardii, Ratibida pinnata, and other prairie species.
